SYZYGIESDane Spangler's Real & Surreal LandscapesShown April 2007“My work is about revealing the mystical splendor of the landscape. I strive to create images that remind us that the natural world is a spectacular luminous story,” explained Spangler. “I express this in two ways. Through photography I seek to capture the amazing and often surreal moments of actual events. Through photomontage I manipulate actual photographs and make them fantastic. This is the syzygy of my work as a whole.” A syzygy is a pair of connected or corresponding things, often opposites. It is used in astronomy to describe an eclipse event when the sun and moon are in opposition. “Rainbow At Dead Horse Point is a spectacular photograph. It’s a digital composite made of multiple images stitched together in the computer. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to show a large version of the work printed on sheet aluminum. It’s a very special picture,” said Brian Parkin of Moab Art Works. “The exhibition also features intriguing photomontage images of masks in landscapes which are quite spooky and very appropriate for this Friday the 13th when the show opens.” Dane was graphic artist for the ExploreMarsNow.org web site, which won the two most prestigious awards for science websites: a Webby Award for best in Science and a Sci/Tech Web Award from Scientific American. Designed to demonstrate the feasibility of humans exploring Mars with present day technology, ExploreMarsNow.org provides viewers with a photo-realistic walk-though of the first Mars Base.
